I never would have suspected Malwarebytes. What a weird bug! Thank you for your post. I uninstalled Malwarebytes (the free version, but it had been installed only a few days ago, so it was the trial version of the full program) as you described, and I could save to the Desktop in Word 2016. I had to use Task Manager to end the Word process.

I could save to other folders, but saving to the Desktop caused Word to lock up. Paste (CTRL+V) what you copied earlier into the blank page. Open a new instance of word, creating a blank page file.

When you edit the document, select all (CTRL+A) and copy (CTRL+C) it. No matter what the destination is, usually documents, it just crashes. Not sure if this is still happening to you or not, but if you are going to File and having Word crash try this. Office 365/Word 2016 in Windows 10 Creator build would lock up when I tried to save a new document to the Desktop. When I do a save as or save, MS Word 2016, Version 1704 Build 8067.2157 becomes non responsive. I am posting here because I could not find any help anywhere, I figure this post may help someone. So I uninstalled it and not Word works again. I had installed the free version right around the time the problem started.

Before considering an upgrade, please be aware that Time Matters 13 and higher do not include Billing Matters Accounting feature functionality.
#Word crashes when saving document upgrade
Suggested Action Upgrade to Time Matters 16.1 or higher. The answer (after much hair-pulling-out) was that MalwareBytes was the issue. Microsoft Word crashes after saving a document to Time Matters via TM Save. Word froze every time I selected “Save As” then “desktop” as the location. But there is an old-school workaround to help with that too: On the ribbon, open the File tab again and this time, scroll down to Option s: Click to open the Options menu and a large menu will open In the left-hand menu underneath Word Options, scroll down and click on Save This will open the menu. I had this start to happen about 2 weeks ago, it was driving me crazy.
